Earth Day, April 22nd, 2013

I had to copy and paste the info below this paragraph, that came in the email to me because I feel that it explains more than I could about Jennifer's book: Homemade with Love: Simple Scratch Cooking from in Jennie's Kitchen. This is MORE than a cookbook. You can read along in every section about Jennifer's life and how she came to enjoy cooking. There's also a section of pages that list the basics to stalk up your kitchen with to help you to make the basic, simple recipes in Jennie's cookbook. I recommend this book to everyone. It's a great read, and a great recipe book. I especially recommend it to people who want to cook for their family and friends, but they don't know where to start or how to do it. This book is a MUST have for Everyone!

My favorite recipe is the Homemade Cheese Crackers. My five and a half year old son lives on goldfish crackers. I would love to make some homemade ones for him, and try to sneak things in them over time, if I could convince him to try them. He has some sensory issues, and food is a big problem for him, and us. I also want to make Jennie's Pumpkin Apple Cake, YUM!

Some of you are thinking, why would I make this cookbook part of my Earth Day Giveaways, and I say, why not! Making food that is grown, organic, of our earth is good for us and great for the earth. Cooking for your family and friends with fresh foods is better than spending money on overly processed food.

While working at some of the most prestigious restaurants in New York City, Jennie Perillo credits her boyfriend - Mikey - with convincing her to take a chance and become a personal chef.  When she became a mom, Mikey who was now her husband, was by her side again encouraging his wife to pursue her love of food and share it with the world by becoming a writer. Jennie’s talent for writing, authentic voice and recipes eventually landed her a position as a contributing food editor to Working Mother magazine, and at the same time, she launched In Jennie’s Kitchen, which has become one of the most popular food blogs on the Internet.

What Jennie didn’t expect was that her love of cooking would also prove to be the therapy she needed most following a devastating tragedy that forever changed the course of her life. In 2011, Mikey died suddenly of an undiagnosed auto-immune disease, called Good Pasture’s Syndrome, while teaching their daughter how to ride a bike.

Shattered by her husband’s passing, and left as a single mom of two young girls (then ages 3 and 8), Jennie found support from family, friends and the community of readers around the world who lovingly made Mikey’s favorite dessert, creamy peanut butter pie, as a tribute to him, Jennie and the deep love they shared, (#APieForMikey).

Jennie shares poignant and heartwarming stories behind all of her delectable dishes from drop biscuit chicken pot pie to vanilla blueberry waffles. A lifelong Brooklynite, Jennie began cooking for her family at age 15, when her father died. Now, more than three decades later, she’s developed hundreds of easy-to-follow scrumptious recipes and prepares everything from scratch - from homemade breakfasts and spreads to salads, mains and sides, snacks  and desserts. While it may seem daunting to re-create recipes that appear to come straight from a world class restaurant, Jennie breaks it down step by step so that anyone can create a meal that truly is a labor of love.
