What is your Child Afraid of?

My three and a half year old son, Matthew, is afraid of so many things. This is one of the few reasons why we are having him evaluated in a few weeks for autism. He is afraid of ceiling fans, hand blowers in bathrooms, the wind, some toilets that flush certain ways, toys that make noise, talking toys, snow globes, foam soap dispensers, and more. Around Christmas, we couldn't even walk past the automated animals and things in Target without him screaming so loudly you would think I was beating him.

This is driving me nuts, as it's too stuffy and warm outside right now to not have our ceiling fans on in our home. There are other rooms that he can spend his time in, but we mostly like to hang out in our living room in front of the television. No, we can't move the television, and it's a big flat screen.

What kinds of things is your child or children afraid of? Please make me feel as though this is a "normal" thing. :( He also bites and chews on his finger nails and chews on toys. This all just doesn't feel normal to me.

  1. My son is terrified of everything in the public bathroom - the hand dryers, the 'blowers' (the vents on the ceiling), and the toilets flushing. He's also very shy around strangers and has just recently started chewing on toys. He's also 3 and a half (will be four at the end of June.) Sorry you're dealing with this uncertainty.

  3. Well my kids are afraid of so many things that I have to make stuff up. So, in order to get her to sleep at night in her room I had to tell her that I can see through the floor so if anything bad is up there I'll know it. Because she's on the 2nd floor and thinks there are dogs in her windows. Or "flying things" in her hair. And Jackson thinks thinks are coming through his walls. Seriously. My kids are total wussies.

  4. Heather,

Praying for you to get the answers you seek when he is evaluated. Whatever the outcome, email me if you need to "talk".

    Hugs,
    Cara

good luck on your sons evaluation if you decide to go ahead with it. i think you should to just ease your mind. i'm sure he's fine! maybe just very cautious =]

  11. My 3 year old is terrified of the loud flush of public toilets. The automated ones send her into a complete melt down.

  12. ((((hugs))))

My daughter is afraid of flushing toilets *sigh*. Sometimes she pretends to be afraid just because she wants a hug ( I can tell, but I don't let on ).
