It's so much more fun for you, and for your baby when you spend actual quality time playing with them. Did you know that I didn't figure this out until I had my third child! I liked to watch my other two children play, and then they played together. But I never really sat down and played with them with their toys. I didn't show them how to stack blocks, how to play with little animals, how to look at books, or how to play with baby dolls. They seemed to learn it on their own, but not until much later.
My youngest daughter Hailey is now sixteen months old. Since I've been playing more with her and her toys, she can stack ten wooden blocks on her own, and balance them without any of them falling! She can carefully climb onto things and stand up or kneel on them, without falling. Hailey can also say Juice, Bandit (our dog's name), Uh-Oh, Dad, Mama, Cookie, and Bye! My other two children couldn't, and didn't speak more than Mama or Dada until they were twenty two months old. With Hailey, she imitates a lot of what my husband, two children, and I do. She watches carefully, and learns super quick. She has been using a fork to eat with for the past three months, and she's now wanting to attempt using a spoon to feed herself yogurt! I am not looking forward to this spoon stage, but it's all a right of passage, and learning too!
We did use a portable swing for a few months with Hailey. We also used a rocker/sleeper thing too. I do still put her in the stroller, even though she's been walking for a few months too. But it's to contain her, because she's so super curious about everything. She has little to no fear about things, or other people. We also used a jumperoo, which was a huge Godsend! Hailey would wear out our arms wanting to jump and jump and jump, over and over again. She loved it! Her newest thing is hanging upside down. She loves to do it. She also loves you to gently swing her while your holding her feet, when she's upside down. (Be super careful if you ever try this with your infant or toddler. When I do it over concrete or hard floors, it tends to freak people out!)
