(Yes, that's my Dad and Mom!) I used to spend some time with my father when I was little. But instead of doing anything that I wanted to do, we always did things that interested him. He likes trains, so I spent time with my father playing with trains, chasing trains, following one of them in his Carmen Guia up the coast from southern California, up to northern California, going to train meets and sales, and more.
But, we never once sat down and talked about what I liked, or what interested me. I grew up learning that what I liked or was interested in, wasn't important to my parents. Being the oldest of three girls and having two younger sisters who had interests, meant more to them then what I wanted to do. So I tagged along to their meets for color guard, baseball, basketball, band, and more! And when I wanted to spend time with my parents, I involved myself in doing what they liked to do. This is probably why between the ages of 8 and 13, why I was shipping off to my aunt's or grandmother's homes for the weekends, because they got tired of having me around them all the time. At least, that's the way I felt.
My dad never rough housed or played with us when we were younger. Not that I remember anyways. Even now, I wonder what my children are missing out on, since their father doesn't really play with them.
