We got a diagnosis for our son yesterday (Monday)

Our three and half year old son Matthew has been diagnosed with Sensory Integration Disorder. He has most of the issues that people with this disorder have. My poor little guy. His hearing is so sensitive that he has been holding his ears screaming when things are so loud to him. We have been letting him wear a knit hat when we go out in public to help his ears to not hurt him. Even certain TV shows will set him off because something in them hums or buzzes and he hears it clearer than we do.

We are meeting with a behaviorist in two weeks, to help show us how we can help him cope and how we can deal with him when it comes to getting him to do things that won't make him so frustrated and upset, and that won't require us having to carry him upstairs for nap and bedtimes, hopefully. Then we have an appointment scheduled to get his hearing tested to see just how sensitive his hearing actually is. The doctors want to keep a close eye on Matthew to make sure that he isn't also autistic. So we will be attending many appointments and I will start posting about SID as it's nicknamed, when I get a chance.

I also purchased the books: The Out-of-Sync Child and The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun: Activities for Kids with Sensory Integration Dysfunction, to help me to better understand our son and to learn how I can help him to cope and to learn that the noises he hears are alright and that he doesn't have to be so afraid of them, and more...

  1. This seems like it might be more manageable than a form of autism. It might mean a lot of little changes for you that could make a difference? Good luck!

  2. Also Raising a Sensory Smart Child was a really good one, that Children's Specialized Hospital recommended to me when Kayla was given the umbrella diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders. http://astore.amazon.com/oneblonramb-20/detail/0143115340
